Migrating from WooCommerce to Shopify without losing SEO: the complete checklist
Redirect plan, URL structure, content, customer accounts, Search Console monitoring: the method for switching platforms without losing traffic.

Changing e-commerce platform is one of the riskiest moments for your search rankings. If the old URLs disappear without redirects, Google hits pages that no longer exist and your organic traffic collapses. Properly prepared, however, a WooCommerce to Shopify migration loses nothing — and is often a chance to improve the speed and structure of the website. Here is our checklist, step by step.
Before the migration: take inventory
Export every existing URL
List every URL on the current website: products, categories, pages, blog posts, important images. You can start from the WooCommerce sitemap, an SEO crawler and the page export from Google Search Console.
Identify the pages that matter
In Search Console (Performance report), identify the pages that generate clicks and impressions. These are the ones to protect first: their content, title and redirect all need care.
Save your SEO data
For each important page, keep the SEO title, meta description, copy, image alt text and structured data. Shopify handles these fields natively: you will just need to carry them over.
Understand Shopify’s URL structure
Shopify enforces a fixed URL structure, different from WooCommerce:
- products:
/products/product-name - collections:
/collections/collection-name - pages:
/pages/page-name - posts:
/blogs/blog-name/post-name
You cannot keep /product/... or /product-category/.... That is why redirects are essential: every old URL must point to its new equivalent.
Build the 301 redirect plan
This is the heart of the migration. In a spreadsheet, map each old URL to the new one:
- Product → equivalent product
- Category → equivalent collection
- Page → equivalent page
- Post → equivalent post
- Deleted content → closest page (never the home page by default)
Shopify lets you create redirects one by one in the admin, or import them in bulk via a CSV file. Shopify redirects are 301s, the type Google recommends for a permanent move.
Migrate content and data
- Products: titles, descriptions, variants, images, prices, stock, SKUs.
- Customers: accounts can be imported, but not passwords. Plan an account activation email.
- Order history: useful for customer service; specialised apps such as Matrixify can import it.
- Content: pages, blog posts, FAQs.
Keep the same “handles” (the end of the URL) as the old slugs wherever possible: it simplifies redirects and keeps URLs consistent.
SEO settings to check on Shopify
- SEO title and meta description of every product and collection.
- Image alt text.
- Product structured data (price, availability, reviews): depending on the theme, may need completing.
robots.txtfile: Shopify generates one by default, customisable if needed.- Sitemap: Shopify generates it automatically at
/sitemap.xml. - Speed: limit apps and optimise images from the start.
Switch-over day
- Check one last time that all redirects are in place.
- Point the domain name to Shopify.
- Test the most important URLs: each must 301-redirect to the right page.
- Place a test order end to end.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
After the migration: monitor
In the following weeks, keep an eye on Search Console for:
- 404 errors (Pages report), fixing every missing redirect;
- clicks and impressions on key pages;
- indexing of the new URLs.
A slight temporary dip is common while Google recrawls the website. A lasting drop almost always points to missing redirects or thinner content.
Classic mistakes
- Redirecting every old page to the home page.
- Deleting long category descriptions that were carrying the SEO.
- Forgetting image URLs and well-ranked PDFs.
- Changing domain name at the same time as platform.
- Installing twenty apps that slow the store down.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a WooCommerce to Shopify migration take?
For a medium-sized catalogue, allow a few weeks between inventory, store setup, data migration and the switch-over. Business integrations and a custom design extend the timeline.
Will I lose my rankings by moving to Shopify?
No, if the 301 redirects are complete and the content is kept. A temporary dip may appear while Google recrawls the website, then traffic stabilises.
Can I keep my WooCommerce URLs on Shopify?
Not exactly, because Shopify enforces its prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/). You can keep the end of the URLs, though, and redirect each old address to the new one.
