How to choose a Shopify agency in 2026: the complete guide
Shopify status, budget, references, process: how to choose the right Shopify agency in 2026, and the questions to ask before signing. A guide by Nifty Link.

Choosing a Shopify agency means trusting someone with the tool that will bring in your revenue. Yet most agency websites look alike: same promises, same logos, same words. This guide gives you a simple method to compare them, and the questions that really make a difference before you sign.
Transparency: this guide is written by Nifty Link, a Shopify agency in Paris. We also tell you when our agency is not the right choice.
Start by defining your project
The right agency depends first on what you want to do. Before asking for quotes, work out where you stand:
- Launch: a first website, a simple catalogue, the goal of selling quickly and validating the market.
- Redesign: a store that exists but no longer converts well enough, or no longer reflects the brand.
- Migration: a move from WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento or Wix, where the priority is keeping your Google rankings.
- Complex project: high volumes, Shopify Plus, ERP connection, B2B, several countries, several stores.
Also note your budget, your deadline, the tools to connect and your 12-month goal. With these, an agency can quote precisely, and you can compare quotes that cover the same thing.
Agency, freelancer or do it yourself?
- On your own: with a Theme Store theme and a few apps, it is possible for a small catalogue and a very tight budget.
- Freelancer: suited to a specific task on an existing store. Check their availability over time.
- Agency: useful as soon as you need design, development, SEO and migration together, with someone who stays responsible for the result.
Understanding Shopify Partner statuses
Any agency can join Shopify’s partner programme for free: each one starts on the Registered tier, then can move up to Select, Plus, Premier and Platinum based on performance. The higher tiers mainly reflect the business an agency brings to Shopify, often on large accounts. They don’t tell you whether it suits your budget, or who will work on your store.
The right reflex: if an agency claims Plus tier or higher, check it in Shopify’s official partner directory. The directory lists only some partners: Plus tier and above are invited, along with a limited number of Registered partners. So an agency missing from the directory isn’t necessarily a bad sign. Above all, look at projects comparable to yours.
Look at references comparable to your project
A prestigious logo on a home page doesn’t tell you what the agency actually did. Ask to see two or three live stores close to yours in industry, catalogue size or type of project. Then test them yourself, on your phone: does the page load quickly? Can you find a product easily? Is checkout simple?
If possible, talk to a former client. One question is often enough: “Would you hire this agency again?”
What budget should you plan?
The differences are large, because agencies don’t target the same projects. A well-scoped store for a new brand doesn’t cost the same as a Shopify Plus project connected to an ERP, which can reach several tens of thousands of euros. At Nifty Link, a store costs €1,500 to €6,000 depending on features, design, a possible migration and the tools to connect.
In every case, add the recurring costs: Shopify subscription, apps, payment fees and maintenance. Our guide Shopify pricing 2026 details the official plan prices and every cost item.
Find out who will actually work on your store
This is the most frequently forgotten question. In some companies, the salesperson who sells you the project isn’t the person who delivers it, and part of the work may be subcontracted. That isn’t a problem in itself, as long as you know about it. Ask who your day-to-day contact will be, who does the development, and how communication works.
Check the technical points that cost a lot later
- SEO and redirects: for a migration, ask to see the method. A 301 redirect plan is essential. See our WooCommerce to Shopify migration checklist.
- Speed: ask how many apps are planned. Each one can add code to every page. Test stores already delivered with PageSpeed Insights.
- Ownership: the store, theme, content and data should belong to you.
- Autonomy: will you be able to edit your text, images and collections without going through the agency?
- Sales tracking: who installs and checks the measurement tools before go-live?
Plan for life after launch
A store is never finished: new collections, promotions, app changes. Ask what is planned after launch: team training, included fixes, response times and the cost of improvements. Clear maintenance avoids nasty surprises.
Questions to ask before signing
- Who will work on my project, and who will be my day-to-day contact?
- Is any part of the project subcontracted?
- Can you show me two or three stores comparable to mine?
- What is included in the quote, and what isn’t?
- How many rounds of design changes are planned?
- How many apps do you plan to use, and what will they cost each month?
- How do you handle redirects and SEO?
- What is the schedule, and what happens if there are delays?
- Will I own the store, the theme and the data?
- What happens after launch, and at what price?
Warning signs
- A quote sent without a single question about your business.
- A promise of guaranteed figures, in sales or Google rankings.
- No live store to show you, only mock-ups.
- A quote with no detail, or one that never mentions migration and SEO.
- Nobody can tell you who will do the work.
Which projects suit Nifty Link
Nifty Link is an independent agency on rue Vivienne in Paris. A certified Shopify Partner with more than 6 years of experience and more than 50 projects delivered, from perfumery (Lempicka Paris, Nissaba) to fashion (Icicle) and streetwear (BSB). You have one point of contact from the first call to go-live: the founder, Lilian Hermandesse. We work in French and English.
We are a good choice for a brand starting out, an SME, or a store to redesign or migrate to Shopify, with a budget of €1,500 to €6,000. For very high volumes or a project involving several teams, a larger agency will often be a better fit, and we will tell you so from the first conversation.

Frequently asked questions
How do you choose a Shopify agency?
First define your project and budget, check the tier the agency claims, test stores comparable to yours, then ask who will actually work on your project and what is planned after launch.
How much does a Shopify agency cost?
It depends on the agency and the project. A complex Shopify Plus project can reach several tens of thousands of euros. At Nifty Link, a Shopify store costs €1,500 to €6,000, excluding the Shopify subscription and apps.
Should you choose a Shopify Plus or Platinum agency?
Not necessarily. These tiers mainly reflect the business an agency brings to Shopify. They are relevant for complex or high-volume projects. For a brand starting out, a smaller, available agency is often a better fit.
How do you check a Shopify agency’s status?
Look at Shopify’s official partner directory, which lists Plus tier and above plus a limited number of Registered partners. If the agency isn’t there, ask it to show you its status.
Do you need an agency in your city?
No. Most Shopify projects are run by video call. A nearby agency is still a plus for kick-off workshops, but the relevance of its references matters more.
